The challenge
Effective quality inspection starts right at the source.
Effective quality inspection starts right at the source.
In plastics processing, seamless quality control is essential – ideally as early in the process as possible to allow faulty parts to be identified and removed immediately.
At production volumes in the millions and with technically complex injection-molded parts, an inline-capable, process-integrated quality inspection becomes indispensable. It ensures consistent dimensional accuracy, shape stability and functional reliability – in real time, within the cycle, and without compromising throughput.
This was exactly the challenge faced by medmix Switzerland AG.
In addition to reliable quality assurance, limited floor space in the production environment added another layer of complexity. The solution had to be compact, fully automated, capable of immediately separating faulty parts, and ensure stable, uninterrupted production. A high level of autonomy was also required to minimize operator involvement.
The solution
Precision at every stage – fully automated, robot-based quality inspection
The flexobot performs robot-based quality inspection directly at the injection molding machine – fully automated, space-saving, and efficient. An 8-cavity gripper removes the parts directly from the mold and guides them through the entire inspection process.
During this movement, a fork light barrier checks whether all parts have been correctly removed. Only once completeness is confirmed does the robot release the mold for closing. A 2D camera then inspects each part in real time, automatically sorting out defective components. This ensures that only flawless parts proceed to the next stage of production.
The integrated sprue handling system discharges sprues efficiently without taking up additional space. A user interface provides a quick visual overview of all inspection images, enabling operators or quality staff to analyze defect patterns and respond to root causes directly.
If recurring defects are detected in specific cavities, these can be individually locked via the user interface – allowing production to continue without interruption. Additionally, for continuous process monitoring, a Q-shot is taken at defined intervals and placed in a dedicated drawer.
With direct part removal, intelligent sorting, and compact design, flexobot is the ideal solution for stable, efficient, and space-saving production. This robot-based inspection system identifies defective injection-molded parts early and removes them immediately – ensuring maximum process reliability and flawless downstream handling.
