The challenge
medmix Switzerland produces large quantities of fragile injection molded parts. These were previously assembled either manually or using automatic assembly machines with bulk material feed.
To make assembly more efficient and less prone to errors, the process should be fully automated. The injection molded parts should be removed and processed without intermediate storage in order to avoid deformation due to cooling.
The solution
With this robot-supported automation solution from robomotion, the injection molded parts are removed directly from the handling units of the injection molding machines and assembled into the finished mixer in a seamless process.
The parts – mixing element, housing and retaining ring – are pressed step by step in presses and then transferred to the testing station. There, a comprehensive quality check is carried out using five cameras. Good parts are packed in boxes of 6,000 pieces each and bad parts are ejected. Four 6-axis robots are used for this solution. Several injection moulding machines are intelligently interlinked so that minimized operation is guaranteed even in the event of faults, without the machines having to be switched off completely. robomotion also developed optimal grippers made of aluminum, which enable precise handling of the parts.
